this weekend, two north catholic wrestlers had the opportunity to wrestle in the toughest tournament in the country, the PIAA State Championships. due to our affiliation with the PIAA, this was the first time north catholic ever participated in the tournament. be it the crowd, the intensity, or the over-all experience, the two falcon warriors went 0-4 in the tournament. Adding insult to injury, the wrestlers had to watch as wrestlers that they beat the previous week went on to capture medals in the tournament. UGH!!!!!
here are the results...
145 - matt dugan -
Round 1 - Cole Baxter - Butler - L - 5-1
- in the first round matt had to wrestle the SW district champion, undefeated sophomore cole baxter. after a scoreless 1st period, matt chose bottom to begin the 2nd and escaped to take a 1-0 lead. Baxter then took matt down with about 10 seconds in the 2nd to go up 2-1. Baxter took bottom and matt let him up. Baxter added a takedown to nail down the 5-1 victory.
1st Round Consolation - Mike English - Lower Dauphin - L 2-0
- matt then wrestled mike english from lower dauphin in his first consolation. matt got in on a high crotch shot at the end of the first, however the short 1st period allowed english to not give up the takedown. matt chose bottom to start the 2nd. english was able to stop matt from escaping for the entire period to keep the score tied at 0-0. english took bottom to begin the 3rd. matt almost had english turned a few times however, english was able to slip out with 15 seconds to go to give him the win at 2-0.
matt dugan finishes his year with a 30-6 record and a career record of 106-35
160 - Kevin Mallon -
Round 1 - Jim Sheptock - Northampton - L - 6-0
- kevin had to wrestle district 11 champion and two time state medalist jim sheptock in the first round of states. sheptock is currently ranked 7th in the country by win magazine. During the 1st period, kevin was in deep on a few shots but was unable to finish on sheptock. Sheptock used a snapdown, go behid to take a 2-0 lead. Kevin was able to escape and the score was 2-1 at the end of 1. Kevin took down to start the 2nd and escaped to tie the score at 2. Sheptock was able to take kevin down 2 more times to take a 6-3 lead to end the second. Sheptock took bottom to begin the 3rd. Kevin was able to hold him down but was unable to turn him to keep the score 6-3.
1st Round Consolations - Luke Etter - Big Spring - L -5-3
- after a scoreless 1st period, kevin took down to begin the second. after a wild scramble, etter was able to slip in a bar and tilt kevin to take a 3-0 lead to end the second. kevin let etter up to begin the 3rd to be down 4-0. kevin took etter down to make the score 4-2. kevin then let etter up to make the score 5-2. kevin began to attack relentlessly but it was too late. a stalling point against etter made the score 5-3.
kevin finished the season with a record of 35-7 and a career record of 104 - 23.
