Basketball Falcons secure 3rd Seed in District 12

With an 80-68 win over John Bartram, the Falcons enter the state playoffs with the #3 seed in District 12. Well, that’s the good news. The not so good news is that by securing the higher seed, the Falcons will play the loser of the Pennsbury/Conestoga consolation game (Saturday, Feb 28). And, that first state playoff game will be on Saturday, March 7, with the time and location to be determined later.
(Note To All: Seems as though most of the lighting budget went to security. Not the best lighting for taking pictures. We apologize for some of the dark photos.)

Did You Notice…
……The security measures at South Philly High? It was almost as tough getting into this game as it is to get on an airplane in this post-9/11 era. There was a metal detector as you entered the school, and no less than 5 security people, who were there to monitor the detector, wand you and, if necessary, do a search of your person. I would have drawn the line at any body cavity searches. I’m committed to the team, but even I have my limits

.….Speaking of security, did you notice that it took not one, but two security guards to get you into the restroom? One guard, in the NE corner of the gym controlled the door leading to the hallway. She was very pleasant and gave directions to the next stop on the restroom run (through the doors, turn right, walk down hall to mural, second door on the left). While making my way down the hall, another security guard asked me what I needed. My response, “The Head.” He said, “Step right up.” He then unlocked the men’s room. It’s nice to know that so many people are so concerned about my bodily functions

.….the team couldn’t seem to find a locker room in the building. After being directed to the SW corner of the gym, they tried the doors and all seemed to be locked. So, sub-assistant, Tom “Hockey Puck” McKenna went into action and found where the team was supposed to be. But, after the team got into the locker room, someone told Puck that they couldn’t use that room. I thought his head was going to explode.
(Jimmy Dever - left, filming and chatting with his brother, John -right)
.…..Speaking of Puck, he was going into a slight panic at 7:00 when he thought he’d have to film the game because our regular film guy, Jimmy Dever, wasn’t there. I told him to relax, as there’s an hour to go before the game and Jimmy usually shows up about 30 minutes prior. Well, sure enough, at about 7:35 (must have been delayed by the cavity search), Jimmy walks into the gym with camera and tripod. Puck was relieved.

.…..Despite my low expectations, the night was a success. Everyone was nice, the games (girls game prior as well as boys game later) went off without a hitch, and on time. There was a flag in the house and a canned version of the National Anthem (although, we prefer Taylor Rand singing it live).

Faces in the Crowd…..
….The bleachers in the southern part of the gym was like a “who’s who” of North Catholic. Mike McBride was trying to sell NC Athletic Director, Tom Kaiser, an insurance policy
.…..In the second row, Stan Witalec was giving some basketball tips to Temple U head coach, Fran Dunphy

.….Next to McBride and Kaiser, Tom Crossett (Tom’s been promoted to Associate Super Fan) was watching the game from the front row. He was sitting with a guy who looked a lot like Mike Ritchie ’84. Actually, Mike makes it to a lot of games, and we’d mention him more often, but we have to save our space so we can talk about important guys like Mike McBride and Tom Crossett

.…..Hanging out in the North bleachers was former North AD and teacher, Fran Dougherty.

….Keeping his eye on the time keeper was NC time clock guy, Will Puchalski, who was sitting across court from the scorers’ table

….The AOH Div 87 guys, Tim Murph and Tug McGraw, both missed the game, so I can’t really bust on them. They were both excused for the evening. Murph was under the weather and Tug had to work.

The Adventures of Drew Colfer
You gotta love this young man. Drew, wearing his normal NC jersey with the #12 on it (Woody Redding is his favorite player) was at the game. Did you expect him to miss it? A little side note on the jersey. Drew showed up with his white jersey, and then noticed the team was in Red. For normal kids, this would have been a bad thing. But, for Drew, who wears a reversible jersey, it was as simple as ducking into a nearby men’s room to flip the shirt to the red side. Drew reappeared and was ready to do whatever he can for the team. Well, at this game, Drew was responsible for keeping the water cups filled for the players. He even missed shooting his customary half time shots in favor of making sure the players had some water in their cups. (See the photo below of Drew and his dad, Lenny, that one of our interns took at half time.) We don’t yet know who we are playing next, or where that game will be, but just as certainly as the sun coming up in the morning, Drew Colfer will be there, rooting on his team.....and maybe even shooting some up at half time.

NORTH WRESTLING SENDS 8 TO REGIONALS

on Saturday, north catholic wrestling traveled to edison high school for their first ever District 12 wrestling championships. the top 4 wrestlers in each weight class advance to the PIAA Southeast Regional tournament this friday and saturday at oxford high school. the day started with north having 10 wrestlers in the district tournament. we ended up placing 8 wrestlers in the top 4 in their weight class! Here are the updates:

MIKE McCALL - 2nd place - mike made it to the district finals only to lose again to lasalle's Casey Kent. Mike went 2-1 on the day with a forfeit and a fall.

DAVID DAVIDSON - 2nd place - david also took 2nd place, losing again to lasalle's matt cimato. david got the first takedown but one again gave up a reversal in the late stages of the 1st. cimato was able to get a takedown and backpoints to put david down big. david made a late rally but fell to cimato 8-5.

Eric Stankiewcz - 5th place - eric went 2-2 on the day in what was probably the toughest weight class in the tournament. eric was disappointed that he did not advance but im sure he will use this set-back as motivation to come back even stronger for his senior campaign.

TJ VAN HORN - DISTRICT CHAMPION - tj became north catholics first ever district champion. tj had 3 falls in the domination of his weight class. tj is wrestling extremely well right now and has his sights on advancing to states and winning a medal.

SHANE RAND - 3rd place - shane continues his successful run in the postseason with a 3rd place finish. shane went 3-1 on the day. he hit a sweeeeet headlock to win by fall in the consolation finals. shane will look to continue his run at regionals.

MATT DUGAN - DISTRICT CHAMPION - matt became north's second district champion with a 3-1 decision over lasalle's nick burns. the 3-1 win was not even that close. burns backed up and stayed away from matt who took the easy victory. matt is practicing well, is very tough to score on, and has one of the best shots in the state. he will be a tough draw for anyone in the regional tournament.

WILL TRAINOR - 6th place - 3 days before the tournament, will got a call that he was going to the district tournament. will wrestled hard but was not very sharp. he went 1-3 on the day to finish in 6th place.

KEVIN MALLON - DISTRICT CHAMPION - kevin is wrestling like a man possessed! he won by tech-fall, fall and fall. kevin dominated his finals opponent and pinned him in the first period. his attacking style makes it very hard for opposing wrestlers to think let alone attack and defend. kevin is determined to end his career at north with a state medal.

AJ VIZCARRONDO - 3rd place - aj continues his impressive freshman campaign with a 3rd place finish at the disticts. aj went 3-1 on the day. he still needs to attack and finish his takedowns. he is wrestling hard and keeps improving.

JERMEY REITH - 3rd place - jeremy, like aj, continues to improve every time he steps on the mat. jeremy is showing flashes of what is to come. he defeated a wrestler in the consolation finals that defeated him earlier in the year by a score of 4-0. like aj, he will gain valuable experience at regionals this week.

Falcons Fall in Semi-Final Game 77-62

Ok, so our Palestra experience this season wasn’t as pleasurable as last year, but we had a great time getting there. But, not to worry, as the Falcons’ season is not yet over. With our membership in the PIAA, the season will go on into March. On Wednesday, February 25 (which happens to be my birthday), the Falcons will travel to South Philly to take on John Bartram, the Pub AAAA runner up in a District Consolation game to decide the #3 and #4 seeds. Roman and FLC will play to decide the top two spots. Our game will be played at 8:00pm at Southern HS (Broad & Snyder Sts).

Did You notice……

….Taylor Rand, our regular National Anthem singer, sang at the Palestra before the game?…..that Taylor used a microphone for the first time this season. Not that she really needed it.…..that North was the visiting team against Neumann-Goretti, as opposed to the home team in both games last year

.…..that Bishop McFadden, the Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia said the pre-game prayer. He must have some pull, as he got a front-row seat right at mid-court. It’s not only good to be king, but sometimes it good to be Bishop

.…..that the concession stand takes your cap when you buy a soda or water. I guess they’re afraid people will chuck them onto the court during the game
.…..that after the game, the Roman fans and team came out. The mascot for Roman (they used to be the Trojans) has to be the most ridiculous mascot I’ve ever seen. It’s like a cartoon character.

Faces in the Crowd….

.…..Sitting in some good seats were State Representative, John Taylor, who was seated with John Hagan and Mike Kaiser. Behind them was Tim Murphy

.…..Next to Tim Murphy were NC Alumni President, Ed White ’55 and Mike Fagan ‘57

…..Sitting in the cheap seats was fellow blogger, Tom Crossett, sporting his brand new soccer championship hoodie

.…..Hanging out with some of the North Catholic administrator was Coach John “Cutty” Cutsavage, who happened to be my line coach sophomore year at North (a long time ago).…..Sitting way up high was former football player and member of the 2008 championship basketball team, Pete Sellecchia

.…..One of our staffers caught Ed Glackin in the crowd

.…..Advisory Board member, North Catholic supporter and all around good guy, Mike McBride ’81, was hanging out in the lower level, catching the game

.…..Two former All Catholic football players were sitting together. Brian Smith ’82 and Mike Morrin ’75

Drew Colfer back where he belongs……
Last week, we reported that Drew Colfer missed the Bonner game because of a scheduled Flyers game (this kid gets around). More than a few people missed Drew last week, but not to worry. Shooting some hoops before the game was Drew in his usual #12 NC jersey. Drew was an invited guest of the team and got some great seating courtside. It was good to see the little guy back form during his shoot around.
We'll be looking for Drew at the game on Wednesday. We sure hope he can make it to the game.

NORTH WRESTLING STARTS THEIR MARCH TO STATES!!!

HERSHEY, PENNSYLVANIA - THE SWEETEST TOWN IN AMERICA!!!

all season, the north catholic wrestling team had two goals. the first goal was to win the district team championship (unfortunately a very talented lasalle team coupled with a very inexperienced north team did not let this happen) and to place in the PIAA STATE wrestling tournament. the PIAA state tournament is with out a doubt the toughest state wrestling tournament in the country. here is what a wrestler must do to get an opportunity to go to the state tournament...

  1. place in the top 4 of their sectional tournament
  2. then place in the top 4 of their district tournament
  3. then place in the top 4 of the southeast pa regional tournament

then a wrestler has an opportunity to go to states. this saturday 11 determined north wrestlers entered the section 8 tournament vying to get through to the district tournament. here are our results.

103 - Mike McCall - 2nd place.

mike ran into lasalle super-freshman casey kent. kent showed a get array of leg attacks which mike had trouble defending. kent secured 4 takedowns to secure a 12-3 win. mike's record heading into the district tournament is 29-6

119 - David Davidson - 2nd place

david ran into his old nemesis matt cimato. david already lost 2 times to the lasalle freshman. david was in on a great leg attack in the first which ended up with one of the best scrambles of the day. unfortunately cimato was able to get his hips up first and get the first takedown. cimato added a quick 2 pt near fall which helped him to a 5-2 victory. david keeps getting close and we feel that he will get him this week of the next. david's record is 27-11

125 -Eric Stankiewcz - 4th place

125 was one of the toughest weights in the tournament. eric went 2-2 on the day losing his 3rd place match 6-0. eric needs to have confidence in this leg attacks and let it loose if he plans on advancing to the regions. eric's season record stands at 22-13

130 - TJ Van Horn - 1st place

tj became the first sectional champion in the history of north catholic. he dominated his opponents winning by fall, tech-fall, and major decision. he only gave up 1 point the entire day. tjs season record is 28-8. he continues to creep up the career win total of 109.

135 - Nick Cancelliere - 5th place

nick wrestled hard all day but came up one place too short. he needs to understand how to win battles and not wrestle like a robot. nick finished his season with a record of 14-15.

140 - Shane Rand - 3rd place

shane wrestled hard all day. shane has been battling a knee injury for the past few weeks which is limiting his low level leg attacks. shane went 3-1 on the day and advanced to the district tournament. we are hoping that shanes knee continues to improve and allow him to wrestle his best in the upcoming tournament. shane's season record sits at 15-12.

145 - Matt Dugan - 1st place

matt wrestled like a man possessed all day. in his final match-up, he totally broke the will of lasalle's nick burns. matt also broke out a sweet tilt this weekend. if he gets that tilt going, he is going to be tough to beat. a state medal is not out of the question. matt's season record sits at 23-3.

152 - Will Trainor - 5th place

will's first varsity season came up one match short on saturday. will is technially a first year wrestler. he showed a lot of heart and determination this season. will's season record ended 12-6.

160 - Kevin Mallon - 1st place

WOW....that's is all you could say about kevin's performance on saturday. he attacked from the start and did not let up for the entire 6 minutes. kevin had a fall, tech-fall and major decision on the day. kevin's performance got him the MOST OUTSTANDING WRESTLER AWARD on the day. Kevin's season record sits at 28-4.

189 - AJ Vizcarrondo - 4th place

189 was also one of the toughest weights in the tournament. aj needs to get better at this setups for leg attacks to be more successful. he basically got hosed in the consolation final match. coach juan and latch almost got the whole coaching staff thrown out of the tournament at the conclusion of this match for arguing with the over-zealous tournament director. ajs season record sits at 26-15

215 - Jeremy Reith - 3rd place

jeremy wrestled a great tournament and finished in 3rd place. jeremy has improved by leaps and bounds this season. he has worked extremely hard and deserves all of the success that he has been having. we feel that if he continues to wrestle hard, he will no doubt make it to regions. jeremy's record this season sits at 17-13

DISTRICT 12 - CHAMPIONSHIPS

the district 12 individual championship will take place this saturday at edison high school. wrestling is to start by 930. come out to support our wrestlers who are trying to become the schools first ever district champion.

Falcons beat Bonner 69-49. Move to Semi-Finals

Maybe today being Valentine’s Day had something to do with it, but there weren’t nearly as many people at this quarter-final game as there was last year when the Falcons beat LaSalle, to reach the Semi-Finals. But, certainly were a lot of people at this game, as the Falcons dismantled the Friars to become the only remaining team still in the playoffs from last season’s semi-final round.

Did You Notice……
…..that North was the home team, yet sat on the traditional away side of the court?
…..that even though it was a home game, we didn’t have Taylor Rand sing the National Anthem before the game.
…..that Gloria was selling tickets at the door. Gloria, who has been selling tickets for North basketball, football games, as well as North wrestling matches for like forever, told one of our staffers a couple of years ago that she was retiring. Every time she thinks she’s out, they pull her back in. It was nice seeing her smiling face at the door today.

…..that Mike Kaiser ‘71, our regular home announcer, was in the house and called on to do the announcing duties. I sometimes get on Mike about his announcing, but he is one of the better announcers in the league. And when he can’t make a game, his son, Mike Jr, takes over for dad.
….that the smell of hotdogs was filling the gym in the second half…….Or, was that just me?
….that soccer assistant, Tom Crossett, seemed to be making amends for failing to call Tim Murphy for the soccer banquet. It’s good to see that they are still on good terms. (Here's a picture of Murph with all of his friends.)

Faces in the Crowd……
There were a lot of people at this game, so we’ll just try to hit the highlights.
…..From the class of 1970, John Connors, was taking in the game from the north bleachers.

…..Also in the north bleachers, and hanging out with NC Athletic Director, was John “Cutty” Cutsavage ’71.
…..Holding up the bottom row on the east bleacher was football coach, Chalie Szydlik, along with his son, and assistant football coach, CJ Syzdlik (photo below).

….Next to the coaches were the contingency from AOH Division 87, Bob Murph, his buddy John, and Bob’s brother, Tim (below Tim, Bob, John to the left of CJ Szydlik),
….Having the night off and enjoying the game was Will Puchalski, who is usually working the scoreboard at North games.
….Also in the house was former North teacher and long time AD, Fran Dougherty ’59......Also in the house were Brian Smith '82, Ed White '55, Mike McBride '81 and Gene Bryan '81. (sorry, no pics)

Where in the world was Drew Colfer??? One person who was noticeably missing from the game was Drew Colfer. For anyone who has attended a home game, you had to have noticed the little guy, with the #12 jersey, who takes to the floor before each game and during halftime to shoot some hoops. Well, Drew had a conflict today. He had Flyers’ tickets and couldn’t make it to the basketball game. We’re told that he was very happy to be at the Flyers game, but was just as upset that he couldn’t see his beloved Falcons play in this playoff game. Even Woody Redding, Drew’s favorite Falcon player, stopped by to chat with Drew, as he does almost every game. Woody was told why Drew couldn’t be there, but he was assured that he would make it to the semi-final game on Wednesday night. Seems that the nest wasn’t the only people who missed little Drew.

Come out to the Palestra on Wednesday night to catch the Falcons play in a semi-final matchup with Neuman-Goretti. Game time is 7:00pm.

North Soccer Unveils Hall of Fame Class of 2009

On the day the Phillies climbed the mountain for the first time in 28 years (October 29, 2008), your North Catholic Falcons captured its 22nd Catholic League Championship in front of a packed and frenzied student body and its prestigious alumni. Not too shabby when you consider the Catholic League started 52 years ago and in time, North Soccer climbed this mountain 42% of the time, or one in every four years. Consider this if you will, in the past 10 years, North Soccer has played in 5 Championship Games and has won 4 of them. In also winning the City Championship again (4-peat), North soccer has played in 18 of 24 title contest and winning 7 times. In some sports, this would be Hall of Fame material.

Now speaking of Hall of Fames, the North Soccer Alumni Association, Inc. announces with great pride and honor the CLASS OF 2009. These men will be honored on March 29, 2009 with great fanfare at Ramonos Caterers, to celebrate their soccer success, what it means to the school and our program and to extol the Salesian tradition that North Catholic stands for.

Without further adieu, here is this years inductees:

Ray Lynch, Class of 1938
Rich Sheridan, Class of 1971
Mat Noel, Class of 1946
Andy Rymarzcuk, Class of 1969
Lou Dollarton, Class of 1946
Dennis Maguire, Class of 1970
Thomas Scanlon, Class of 1957
Mike Robinson, Class of 1976
Jack Ruggero, Class of 1965
Rusty Bono, Class of 1979

DID YOU KNOW...................

North Catholic Soccer Alumni, Inc. is comprised of volunteers representing the 60s, 70s,80s and 90s. Their task is not an easy one. Their goal is to compare and contrast different players from different teams in different eras. Not to mention, there have been thousands of boys who have played soccer at North starting in the late 1920s! I hope that you noticed that this group does not identify the candidates. That very important job is left to you and me. If you played at North or are just a fan of the game and you believe that someone has been overlooked or not considered, please let us know.

How you might ask? Well, you can go to the website: wwww.northcatholicsoccer.com and sign the guest book and let us know who that person is. You can contact any of the coaches of the current team. You can come and celebrate with us on 3/29 and fill out a nomination form. These are just three ways, I am sure you can think of many more.

For information on tickets, please contact: Joe Steffa at 215-783-8020 or jsteffa@comcast.net; Jerry Brindisi at 215-906-8496 or brindinski@aol.com; Tom Crossett at tcrosset@northcatholicsoccer.com.

Falcons Clinch Playoff Bye with win over Prep

There are good games, and there are bad games. The game against St Joe Prep Tuesday night was more like “huh???!!!”. Get this; at the end of the first quarter, the score was exactly 4-1 (that’s not a typo, folks), with the Falcons leading. More than half the quarter was over before anyone scored, and that was a free throw by Prep’s Dan Fitzpatrick, when he made the only free throw by Prep all night. I was so excited; I almost applauded the point, because it came with only 3:34 remaining in the first quarter. It almost seemed like there was a cover on both baskets, as the ball just wouldn’t fall for either team. You’d think this game was a defensive battle. It wasn’t. It was just that nobody could put the ball in the hoop. Prep shot 13-42 from the field (30.1%), and the Falcons shot 11 for 28 (39.3%). But, the Falcons hit a respectable 15 of 19 free throws, while the Prep only attempted 2 from the charity stripe. To show that it wasn’t necessarily a great defensive effort by either team, you only need to look at the number of turnovers (NC 12 – SJ 10) and steals (NC 5 – SJ 1). It was one of those games where you’re grateful to get out of the gym with a 38-31 win, and hope that doesn’t happen again.

Coach McCarron Gets 100 Wins!
Coach will probably hate that I’m mentioning this, but the win tonight was significant in several ways. First, the win secures, at least, second place in the Red Division and assures the team that they will get a first round bye in the playoffs. Second, it is the 100th win of coach McCarron’s career at North. Finally, this milestone win was against coach’s mentor, Speedy Morris. But, with Mike being Mike, this milestone will be downplayed by him. As he has told me before, “Coaches don’t win games, players do. Coaches only lose games when they don’t put their players in a position to win.” This is classic Mike McCarron. He puts the collective success of his players over his own personal achievements. But, I’d like to say to coach, congratulations and thank you. May your players win another 100 in short order, and may they all be successful in life, in part because they had you in their lives during their high school years.

Hockey Puck Strikes Again!
During the varsity games, I usually sit at the scorers’ table and track stats for the Falcons. I generally only handle rebounds, assists, turnovers, steals, blocked shots and minutes. But, a few games ago, I started keeping track of timeouts, mainly because it’s something that the coaching staff is interested in down the stretch. But, Tom “Hockey Puck” McKenna keeps the “official book” at our home games. During this game, I noted that Prep had used both of their 30 second timeouts in the first half. In the second half, after Prep called their second full timeout (leaving them with just 1 full timeouts), the Prep scorekeeper checked the number of timeouts remaining for Prep. He and Puck agreed that Prep had two timeouts remaining. I said, “No, Prep used 2 30’s in the first half and two full in this half. One left.” Both of them looked at their books again and both said that they showed Prep with 1 full and a 30 remaining. Two different North coaches, who also track timeouts, also showed Prep with only one timeout remaining. Will Puchalski, the timekeeper, who enters timeouts into the clock computer, also showed Prep as having one timeout remaining. The ref came over to check, and Puck argued that because both he and the Prep scorekeeper showed 2 remaining, that must be right. The ref stated that Puck’s book was “official”, so Prep had 2 remaining. In the end, Prep ended up with 6 timeouts. I’m just glad that it didn’t matter much in the whole scope of events. The problem here is that Puck chats too much with the opponent’s scorekeeper to know what’s going on half the time. Maybe he should go back to wearing two pair of glasses. But, what do I know?

LASALLE STOPS NORTH IN THE DISTRICT TEAM SEMI-FINALS

the district 12 team semi-finals (formally the Catholic League Wrestling Championship) had all that you would have wanted in a wrestling match. close, hard fought victories, dramatic falls, coaching moves and even a snow delay, unfortunately the hard fought victories and dramatic falls seemed to go in lasalle's favor and allowed them to win 41-18.

we knew we had a tough road. this lasalle team is quite possibly the best lasalle team of all time. we had some great performances however, lasalle just had a little too much for us.

best of luck to lasalle as they represent District 12 in the PIAA Team Championships.
