Administration Feels No Responsibility to Those Left Behind

Has North Catholic closed already? By the looks of the North Catholic sign at Hunting Park and Torresdale, evidently we have. For the past six weeks, since before the Communion Breakfast, our sign has been blank. Are there no more baseball or lacrosse games? Has the crew boat sunk? Is there nothing positive happening in our school that the world needs to know? It would appear so!

When the shameful news of our demise was announced, our boys were promised a year like any other year, everything status quo. Nothing would be removed from the walls, proms and athletic events would take place. Do yourself a favor, take a drive by the school and see if you get the same sick feeling in your gut as I have, one that suggests it has been over for months within the walls. To not promote our boys in their spring endeavors is an abomination. The last time I checked people are PAID to provide these services to our men and the community. Isn't it torture enough that we'll have to endure that emptiness in two months time? Time for the powers that be to wake up and fulfill their half-hearted promises.

If you wanted to call and ask about this, or find out about the next baseball game, direct that call to the President's Office. That number is 215-831-1234. One might ask, at times like these, wouldn't the adults attempt to make these disenfranchised boys feel good about their uncertain future. But then again, why would they? Remember, the President of the school is primary responsible for the closing of the school. It was calculated and done purposefully. Not much of a legacy except in his own mind.

Some Alumni have approached the school about having one last mass at the school. Sort of a send off, in a perverse way, to say good-bye and remember what North stood for for most of us. I guess I don't have to tell you the answer, it was "No." Think twice about contributing to the Heritage of Faith campaign being sold at your local parish. Remember, that within this campaign, 20% of what you give goes to the building of those cathedrals they call new schools in the suburbs. You know the schools that none of our boys can attend. And when one might ask you why you don't help, you can tell them because of North's President forced you to reconsider Catholic education and who should pay for it. Yep, a great legacy, "What would Jesus say." Someday, we will all find out and I want to be there.

While I am upset about this as you Tom, there should be much more scorn for this particular issue directed at Mrs. Casey. She has done a disservice to the young men for years, and has taken it to new levels here. The sign especially is her job, and even when students would volunteer to change it themselves she was resistant. Unlike the priests at North she chose to be there, and as such should be held even more responsible. This is only one example of the things she has messed up at North over the last 20+ years, but the list is long.

There is a saying that goes, "If it ain't broke don't fix it". Well this is not the case of North and most Archdiocesan Schools in Phila. They are broken and need fixin. I applaude the Oblates and all the faculty and volunteers who are working tirelessly for the boys as they go through this tough time. I also thank the Oblates for seeing Catholic Education into the future by taking the initiative to take on North Cristo Rey and not giving up on Catholic Education in the community and Philadelphia. Personally, I am tired of all the bashing. If you want to see what is going on down at North, don't look at the sign, go down to the river this Sunday or go over Jersey for the North Judge game...

I agree with all that you wrote.
I think it's time that the Daily News picked up on the Alumni involvement over the years.
We've gotten pretty good press from them.
Also received a request for a donation to the catholic charitie$
appeal. NEVER!!!
Letter to the head carpetbagger going out today.
They have managed to cut off the entire River wards and N.J.with their descision.
I hate the archdioce$e more than the dallas cowboys.
One of my classmates Joe Kaiser talked about meeting on the last day of school to have a picture taken on the front steps. Your thoughts

Cathy, I'm sure like most, your passion for North Catholic runs deep and while I agree that the system is broke the solution was by no means an Oblate initiative. This undertaking was strictly a lay effort spearheaded by Paul Hondros and had been in the pipeline for over two years. There was NEVER any mention of Cristo Rey by the Oblates, and I'm at North more than most. Were it not for the efforts of the lay alumni, coaches and their respective followings, North would have met its demise years ago. The word "bandwagon" comes to mind, and mention of Cristo Rey this past school year in the building by the powers that be was nonexistent, only efforts to shepherd our boys to other Diocesan institutions. "Bashing" is one thing; setting the record straight is more accurate.
