NORTH WRESTLING READY TO START THE 2009-2010 SEASON...
The North Catholic Wrestling team opens their 2009-2010 season this weekend at the Southeastern PA Classic. The tournament takes place Friday and Saturday at Wissahickon High School in Ambler. Wrestling begins on Friday at 5pm and on Saturday at 9am. We are taking a mix of experienced and inexperienced wrestlers to the tournament. Here is a preview for the upcoming season...

103 - Mike McCall - Senior - (34-9) - Mike is ready to begin his Senior year as one of the best 103lbers in the State of Pennsylvania. Last season he finished 1st in the SEPA tournament, 3rd in the Governor Mifflin Tournament and 7th in the Escape the Rock Tournament. He was a SE Region Qualifier and won 2 matches at Regionals. He was a member of the SEPA National team this summer and has goals on a high state medal. Despite missing his freshman year with an injury, he currently has 69 wins and needs 31 wins to join the exclusive 100 win club. Mike is also the #1 ranked academic senior in his class! Mike will be backed up by Sophomores Gary Robinson and Anthony Siwek.

112 - Tim Markert - Senior - (7 - 13) - Tim is ready to improve on his 7 varsity wins last season. He has attacked the off-season program hard and has looked much improved. A regional birth is not out of the question.

119 - Erik Stankiewcz - Senior - (24 - 15) - Erik begins his 3rd year on varsity at 119lbs after wrestling at 125lbs for most of last season. Erik was a PA District Qualifier and a 5th place finisher at the Governor Mifflin Tournament. Eirk is currently one of our team leaders and is also the President of the North Catholic Student Body. Erik trained very hard this spring and summer and is ready to earn a state birth. Eirk will be backed up by Freshman Kevin Leyland.

125 - David Davidson - Senior - (30 - 14) - Over the past 3 years David has solidified himself as one of the best wrestlers in Southeast Pennsylvania. David finished 2nd in the SEPA Tournament, 3rd in the Governor Mifflin Tournament, 8th in the Escape the Rock Tournament and was a PIAA Regional Qualifier. David currently has 67 wins in his 3 varsity years and needs 33 wins to join the 100 win club at North Catholic. David is one of our team leaders and is one of the hardest working wrestlers in the room. David has a great chance to be on the podium in Hershey in March.

130 - Tad Meyers - Junior - Tad will begin his first varsity season as North Catholic's 130lber. Tad had over 10 junior varsity wins and placed in 3 JV Tournaments last season. Tad has looked good in practice and needs to gain some confidence if he is going to be successful on the varsity mats.

135 - Nick Cancelliere - Senior - (14 - 15) - Nick begins his senior season with very lofty goals. He had some big wins for us last season including 4 wins at the Abington Duals. Nick has improved drastically since last season and looks to improve on his 14 varsity wins last season. Nick needs to work on his bottom wrestling if he wants to go deep in the post-season. Nick will be backed up by Junior Joe Janda. Joe is the 3rd Janda brother to wrestle for North since the late 1990's. Joe continues to improve every day and will be a great asset to the varsity squad when he is inserted in varsity lineup.

140 - Thomas Goodyear - Junior - (8 - 10) - Thomas begins this season as the starter at 140 after filling in last season for injured wrestlers. Thomas had 15 Junior Varsity wins and won a few JV tournaments last season. Thomas is extremely fast and athletic and will catch some people by surprise this season. Thomas is also a member of the North Catholic Soccer Team.

145 - Anthony White - Senior - (33 - 5) - Anthony joins the Falcon wrestling team after a successful stint at Frankford High School. Anthony was a Sectional champion, the District 12 MVP and took 5th place at the PIAA Southeast Region. Anthony was also a member of the SEPA National Team this summer. Anthony has beaten many state medalist has eyes on a Regional Championship and a high state medal.

152 - Will Trainor - Senior - (13 - 5) - Will was a District Qualifier and had 13 wins in his first varsity season. Will has improved dramatically since last season and can wrestle with anyone in the region. Will is one of the hardest workers in the room and is an old school type of North Wrestler - FORWARD, FORWARD, FORWARD.

160 - Tim Maguire - Sophomore - (1 - 0) - Tim joins the varsity team after a successful stint on JV last season where he won over 10 matches. Tim is very athletic but needs to work on winning tough situations. If Tim continues to improve and work hard, he will have a very successful season.

171/189 - Gil Dougherty - Senior/ Brian Sweeny - Junior/ Riccardo Roman - Senior - all three of these wrestlers will be seeing time at both 171 and 189 this season. Although they are upper-classmen, they do not have much varsity experience but all 3 have experienced success on the JV level. Gil has the most experience and seems to be coming along nicely with his technique and ability. Brian and Riccardo are both athletic and hard workers that are going to improve as the season goes along.

215 - AJ Vizcarrondo - Sophomore - (29 - 18) - AJ begins his Sophomore year after one of the most successful Freshman seasons in North History. AJ placed 5th in the Governor Mifflin Tournament, 6th in the Escape the Rock Tournament and was a PIAA Regional Qualifier. AJ also had a busy summer. He was a MAWA Eastern National Champion, finished 3rd at the NHSCA Freshmen Nationals which made him a Freshman All-American and was on the MAWA Jr. National Freestyle Team. USA Wrestling currently has AJ as the 10th best Sophomore at his weight class in the country. AJ should be in the running for his first PIAA State birth and possibly as state medal.

285 - Jeremy Reith - Junior - (21 - 16) - Jeremy was probably our most improved wrester on the team last season. He was a PIAA Regional Qualifier and won a match at Regionals. Jeremy also took 5th place this summer at the MAWA Eastern National Championships. Jeremy is an extremely fast and agile heavyweight and reminds some of us as a young Eric French. If Jeremy continues to improve he should qualify for this first trip to Hershey and be in the running for a state medal.

Here is the preview of the upcoming North Wrestling Season. It took me over 90 minutes to write. Please don't break my stones about spelling and grammar and parents, i tried to remember the best that I could off the top of my head. I know I probably missed a bunch and I'm sure you will tell me....coach sav
